Sclerotherapy

Spider and varicose veins are a common problem for adults, especially those over the age of 50. While those swollen vessels may be painless, they can also lead to uncomfortable symptoms like fatigue, aching and swelling. Even vessels that don’t cause discomfort can be a source of embarrassment, preventing some individuals from wearing certain types of clothing or participating in some activities. If you are unhappy with the appearance of spider or varicose veins, we can help. Sclerotherapy is available at New Visage to eliminate those unsightly veins and give your legs a smoother, clearer appearance.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a vein treatment that involves injections of a special sclerosing agent directly into spider and varicose veins. This solution affects the lining of the veins, causing the walls of the vessel to stick together and the vein to seal closed. The collapsed vein is eventually reabsorbed by the body and blood is rerouted through healthy veins nearby.

What does it treat?
Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for the following types of veins:

  • Spider veins – appear as red or blue networks on the surface of the skin
  • Varicose veins – swollen veins that can bulge and twist above the skin’s surface
  • Reticular veins – blue and green veins visible beneath the surface of the skin

What is the procedure like?
Sclerotherapy injections are fairly painless and take just a few minutes to complete. Some patients report a mild burning as the solution goes into the vessel, but this subsides very quickly. After treatment, most patients can return to regular activities right away. Compression stockings may be recommended after treatment to stimulate healthy blood flow and promote faster healing to the area.
What kind of results can I expect?
Early results of sclerotherapy can often be seen right away, but results will continue to improve over time as vessels collapse and are reabsorbed by the body. Most patients will need a series of 1-4 treatment sessions to completely eliminate veins. Once the veins are gone, they will not come back. However, new veins can appear in the same location, requiring subsequent treatments over time.

Sclerotherapy has been used for many years and continues to be considered the gold standard in spider vein treatment. To find out if this injectable procedure is right for you, contact New Visage at 252-808-2NEW.
